Chime In: Where’s the Best Poutine in Brantford?

Certain cities are known for being the ideal destination for a particular type of food or beverage: Philadelphia has its cheesesteaks, Seattle is known for great coffee; Montreal has its smoked meat; Chicago boasts its deep dish pizza… and Brantford has amazing poutine (seriously – hear us out). If you’ve been following any of the great new Facebook pages that have popped up to share local eats (we love Brantford COVID-19 Business Delivery and Food-to-Go in Brantford-Brant Area), you’ve likely seen hundreds of photos of unique variations of the traditional Quebecois dish, featuring French fries, cheese curds and brown gravy.

We’ve rounded up some of our favourites, but we’d love to hear where in Brantford has your very favourite poutine. Share your photos on social media, and remember to tag the business and #BrantfordTogether so we can drool along with your friends.

A&P Diner | 215 Henry St. (in front of Lowes)

This walk-up food truck has amazing fast food poutine that you simply can’t miss. Rave reviews online about their Buffalo Chicken Poutine and Mozzarella Stick Poutine (like a classic poutine topped with five gooey deep-fried mozzarella sticks!) will make you stop in your tracks on your next trip to Lowes. You can also order this poutine through Skip the Dishes!

Gillies | 207 Erie Ave. | 519-770-3514

If you didn’t know about Gillies before COVID-19, we’re pretty sure you do now. Known for their wings, pizzas, and plethora of indulgent fried foods, their poutine menu does not disappoint. Choose from flavours like Popcorn Chicken, Cheesy Beef, and even Lil’ Pickle – poutine with dill pickle seasoning, fried pickle chips, 2 deep fried pickle spears, cheese, ranch and mayo.

Goo’s Takeout and Catering | 230 Shellard Lane | 519-752-1111

You know the poutine is going to be amazing when there’s an entire section of the menu dedicated entirely to this dish. Goo’s makes ten versions of this decadent dish, varying from a traditional version with chicken or beef gravy to a variety of gourmet poutines. Locals can’t stop raving about their Big Mac Poutine; if you’re a lover of this “Golden Arches” special, then don’t miss this dish, loaded with beef gravy, ground beef, pickles, onions and Thousand Island dressing.

Lil’ Louie’s Eats & Sweets | 1146 Colborne St. | 519-304-5337

This family-owned and operated small business is known for its friendly service, delicious food with reasonable prices, and their unique take on popular sweet and savoury treats. Locals rave about their BBQ Pulled Pork Poutine and their Triple Pork Poutine, which features pulled pork, sliced sausage, bacon, gravy and melty mozzarella.

Lonnie’s on Market | 42 Market Street | 519-752-0011

This local hotspot has 38 – that’s right, THIRTY EIGHT! – specialty poutines made with real cheese curds. We can’t possibly list them all in this roundup, but make sure you check out their menu on Facebook before ordering. From Breakfast Poutine topped with bacon and eggs, to Jalapeno Popper Poutine topped with their own poppers, to even sweet versions like Chocolate Bacon and Cherry Cheesecake, if you’re looking for poutine, you’ve gotta eat here.

The Duke on Park | 505 Park Rd. | 519-304-6696

The Brits know their gravy and their potatoes! If you’re looking for a classic version of poutine, check out this British pub for classic Quebecois-style poutine featuring rich beef gravy and real cheese curds. They even have a British version of this dish, which features seasoned criss-cut fries topped with cheese curds, slow braised beef and Pataks Curry sauce.
