The Wayne Gretzky Sports Centre has been the primary sports and leisure facility of Brantford for over 40 years! It first opened in 1967 as “The North Park Arena,” with one arena. It added another ice pad in 1972 and then, in 1974, it added an aquatic facility named the Brant Aquatic Centre. The facility was renamed the Wayne Gretzky Sports Centre in 1982, recognizing a long list of accomplishments from "The Great One" that year including the 50 goals in 50 games record (actually done in 39 games), most goals in a season and becoming the only NHL player in history to break the 200-point mark. In that year, Gretzky was also the first Canadian named Associate Press Male Athlete of the Year, Sportsman of the Year (Sports Illustrated) and Canadian Press’ Newsmaker of the Year.
The facility underwent an extensive renovation in 2010-13 to now include: 4 pad Arena, indoor walking track, 65m & 25m pools, Hydro Therapy Pool, Warm Water Pool, Sauna, 150ft Waterslide, Dryland Training Room, Gymnasium, Fitness Centre offering a wide variety of land and water exercise classes, fully equipped weight room, restaurant, wellness centre, pro shop and more!
The Wayne Gretzky Sports Centre is also the home to the Brantford & Area Sports Hall of Recognition which proudly recognizes hometown heroes through features such as inductee artifact and memorabilia displays, honour wall of recognition, interactive inductee touch screen zone, trivia game and broadcast booth as well as a mini theatre and Wayne Gretzky tribute area.
