Local Shopping Just Got Even Better!

Local Shopping Just Got Even Better!

Trendy. Local. Shopping. And it’s open all year? This is music to our shopaholic ears.

The Oakhill Urban Market, over 6,000 square feet of warehouse space converted into a mini urban shopping district, opened for business on July 6, 2017 at 649 Colborne Street West in Brantford. The market, which currently features 34 different boutiques, is open Thursday to Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Sunday 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

From deliciously scented soy candles and oils to crystals, clothing, knick-knacks and everything else in between, The Oakhill Urban Market boasts a wide variety of vendors with trendy one-of-a-kind pieces you won’t find anywhere else.

Oakhill Urban Market Owner, Joanna Sangster, is also the owner of Soy Savvy Company (est. Dec 2015). She hosts craft and vendor shows in Brantford and has a diverse background in many industries from start-ups, construction, industrial, non-profit, retail, small business, etc. Taking her company from a casual home business to a brick and mortar store April 1st, Joanna was approached by her landlord, Karl Bicz, in May to discuss over 6,000 square feet of warehouse space that was becoming available shortly thereafter. Working collaboratively, Joanna and Karl came up with the concept of opening a year round market. Adamant that this would not become a ‘flea market,’ Joanna strongly kept to her vision to ensure the market’s success by creating a modern market that would attract shoppers of all ages, young or “experienced,” and be a trendy, urban, hip establishment with an artisan flare.

Sangster is very passionate about the market and its impending success adding, “People love supporting local and handmade, but struggle to find these types of products on a regular basis. We also wanted to put Brantford on the map, just like other cities with their artisan markets; Woodstock, Paris, Toronto. We wanted to allow dogs in the building too especially for travellers so that they could come shopping without worrying about Fido. In fact, we are super excited because Boomer’s Pet Treats just took our last boutique for Phase 1 and they can make custom cakes for Fido’s birthday!”

There is something for everyone in your family (and fur family!) when you visit Oakhill Urban Market. Phase 1 began July 6, 2017 and just reached capacity, with Phase 2 opening on October 1st and Phase 3 in Spring 2018. The plan is to grow the number of boutiques inside through each phase, with approximately 80 boutiques in operation by Phase 3. Anyone interested in opening a boutique is invited to look on the website for more information regarding rent.
