Is It Your Goal to Start Your Own Business in 2018?

The Brantford-Brant Business Resource Enterprise Centre (BRC) is a part of the City of Brantford’s Economic Development and Tourism Department and also receives provincial funding from the Ministry of Economic Development and Growth.

Located at 1 Market Square in Downtown Brantford, the BRC has, in recent years, become the hub of small business activity in the city. Brantford was recently acknowledged by Financial Times Ltd. for being the most “business-friendly” micro-city in North America, and part of that stems from the BRC’s hard-working team who diligently help the entrepreneurs in this city each and every day.

The BRC provides information, resources and free professional consultations on all aspects of an individual’s business needs. They provide services that can assist with: business registration, market research, business planning and review, financial planning, regulatory and tax requirements, succession planning, and much more.

In addition to providing one-on-one consultations, the BRC also offers free workshops on a weekly basis. The core list of workshops offered each month at the BRC includes: Business Planning, Financial Forecasting, Market Research, Marketing & Sales Plan, Basic Bookkeeping, and the Starter Company Plus Orientation. The last Thursday evening of every month a “networking session” is held and a speaker is brought in on varying specialized topics. In the past, topics have included: Search Engine Optimization (How to Get Your Business to Page 1 on Google), Time Management, Employee Retention, and Customer Loyalty, to name a few. For a full workshop listing with descriptions, please visit the Brantford-Brant Business Resource Centre website.

The BRC also facilitates two outstanding grant programs for entrepreneurs in the city: Summer Company and Starter Company Plus. Summer Company is for Youth ages 18-29 who are in school full-time and planning to return to school full-time in the fall. Summer Company students must meet with Ramona Gallagher, Business Consultant at the BRC, and bring to her a viable business idea. Upon approval of a short written business plan, students are given up to $1500 and then another $1500 upon completion of the program. Starter Company Plus is for eligible entrepreneurs 18+ who are not in school full-time and who do not plan to return to school-time. Businesses must be new (up to 12 months) or an expansion (up to 24 months). Viable businesses that meet all other eligibility requirements can receive up to $5,000 in grant funding.
