Skate 2 Heal Skate-A-Thon Presented by Nova Vita

Brant Sports Complex, 944 Powerline Rd., Paris

Admission: FREE

Nova Vita is pleased to announce the return of their second annual Skate 2 Heal Skate-A-Thon. Make sure to sharpen those skates!  This year we have a few goals in mind: to have 75 kids come out to skate (i.e. a lap for every dollar raised), to have fun, to help raise money for the kids who come to Nova Vita, and to gain a true sense of helping others!  This fundraiser is an excellent opportunity to get out of the house and burn off all those Christmas calories!

22nd Annual Mayor’s Levee and Open House

Dominion Telegraph Concert Series: Ron Sexsmith

Ron Sexsmith is undoubtedly one of the greatest songwriters of his generation with his smooth sound and velvet lyrics.  On this evening Paris Ontario is most lucky to be blessed with his presence as he performs with Sarah Jane Scouten for an intimate crowd at the Dominion Telegraph Centre.  Hopefully you got your tickets early, as this highly anticipated performance is already sold out!

2nd Annual Brant Improv Festival

Royal Canadian Legion Branch 90, 21 Oak St., Brantford

Admission: $7

January is the time to get out of the house and warm up with some laughter, and the 2nd Annual Brant Improv festival is just the ticket to do that! Both evenings are promised to deliver a stellar lineup of talent, and the house band ‘See You Next Thursday’ will be performing both nights.  All proceeds from the evening will go to Brantwood Community Services and Desiree's Angels.  We hope to see you there!

Rik Emmett Rocks On – Artists Speaker Series

In this speaker series, we get up close and personal with distinguished Canadian Artist Rik Emmett by having him tell the story of his career with the use of video, still photos, readings and an interview.  Rik Emmett was the lead singer, songwriter and guitarist with Triumph from 1975 to 1988, and has been inducted into the Canadian Rock Hall of Fame, the Music Industry Hall of Fame, and the Junos Hall of Fame! Rock enthusiasts are sure to enjoy this evening!

Peterborough native Jennifer Robson, who has a doctorate from the University of Oxford, is quickly becoming one of the country’s bestselling authors. Her novels titled ‘Moonlight Over Paris’, ‘Somewhere in France’, and ‘After the War is Over’, all appeared at the same time on the Globe and Mail’s Canadian Bestseller List.  Join us for wine and cheese, and an intimate discussion with Jennifer.  Seating is limited, so be sure to purchase your tickets in advance.

The Fugitives are a Vancouver-based indie folk collective who have been nominated for multiple Canadian Folk Music Awards. Their last record, "Everything Will Happen" was nominated for Best Roots Album at the Western Canadian Music Awards. Known for a distinct modern folk sound with an emphasis on harmony and storytelling, their live shows have brought them to twelve countries!

Family Literacy Day

Admission: FREE

The Family Literacy Committee of Brant held the first ‘Let's Read’ event in the winter of 2013, with the goal of encouraging family reading.  Each year one book is selected and distributed throughout the community.  This year’s book is “The Man with the Violin” by Kathy Stinson, and illustrated by Dusan Petricic.  Kathy will even be on site at the downtown library for a reading of her book! If you have children, be sure to mark this day in your calendar and get out for some free literary fun!

Brant Historical Society Speaker Series presents ‘The Early Black History of Brantford’

Join the Brant Historical Society on this evening when Sarah Clarke, Team Lead-Research, Archaeologist; Archaeological Research Associates speaks about the early black history of Brantford.  If you’ve never been to one of the Speaker Series events, you should definitely attend! It’s an engaging and intimate environment, and a chance to  learn about local history that happened right here in Brantford. Light refreshments will be provided as well.
