In honour of Family Literacy Day on Sunday, January 27, 2019, the Family Literacy Committee of Brant will host their annual Let’s Read program with a kick-off at two locations – the Brant Sports Complex in Paris at 1:00pm and the Brantford Public Library, Main Branch at 3:00pm.
Family Literacy Day is a national awareness initiative created by ABC Life Literacy Canada in 1999 and held annually on January 27 to raise awareness of the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family.
The 2019 book, as selected by the Family Literacy Committee of Brant, is Mattland by Hazel Hutchins and Gail Herbert, illustrated by Dušan Petričić.
Author Hazel Hutchins will visit both locations to read the book she co-authored and each family will receive a copy of the book to take home.
The book tells the story of Matt, a boy who is miserable. The subdivision where he now lives is surrounded by nothing but muddy fields of rocks and sticks. But when Matt ventures out, his imagination kicks in. He draws a muddy, winding line and names it Snake River. A pile of rocks becomes the Dog Tooth Mountains. Just like that, Mattland is born. Soon a girl shows up with a handful of helpful odds and ends. Piece by piece, she and Matt expand their new world with popsicle-stick bridges and scrap-paper boats. And when a rainstorm finally threatens to wash everything away, all the neighbourhood kids appear and help stave off the flood. Evocative of childhood friendships and with sublime illustrations that brighten in colour as the story progresses, Mattland is an inspiring ode to cooperative play. (Source: Indigo)
Mattland has won the Marilyn Baillie Picture Book Award, the 2009 Alberta Literary Award and was included in the Ontario Library Association’s Best Bets List as well as the Canadian Children’s Book Centre’s Best Books for Kids & Teens, 2009.
The Family Literacy Committee of Brant formed in 2004, and is a group of community partners who work together to promote and support family literacy in Brantford and Brant County. The goal of the Let’s Read program is to encourage family reading. Each year, one book is selected and distributed throughout the community.
