Special Olympics Ontario Brantford would like to launch a new program this fall and are looking for community feedback on the project.
Active Start is a program that has been developed by Special Olympics Canada for young athletes. It is a family oriented program where those between two and six years of age with an intellectual disability are encouraged to develop their basic motor skills such as walking, running, jumping, balancing and throwing in a fun and safe environment. These activities provide a good foundation for everyday activities as well as a base for future Special Olympics sports training.
When children with an intellectual disability have the opportunity to experience play and have guidance in basic motor skills, it has been proven to enhance physical, social and cognitive abilities. While these young athletes learn about basic athletic skills there is also an opportunity to educate parents/caregivers with information and resources that allows them to participate in similar activities in their homes. For more information about the Active Start program, contact Special Olympics Ontario Brantford.
Special Olympics Ontario Brantford would not be able to continue providing these opportunities for their athletes without the help from all of the amazing volunteers. If you are interested in becoming involved with Special Olympics Ontario Brantford, volunteer opportunities are available on their website.
