February Featured Artist: Carol Ann King

February’s Featured Artist is C.A. (Carol Ann) King, a Brantford-based award-winning and bestselling author with over 40 books available across multiple fantasy subgenres.

King was diagnosed with clinical depression after losing her mother, father and spouse over a three year period. Her feelings of stress, grief and loss created walls of sadness around her and left a strong mark on her psyche. By redirecting her emotions, she found a new passion in writing that helped her as well as her readers. “I wanted to create a world into which other people with similar problems could escape. I wanted to share the one place that had helped me for many years.”

She has won a number of awards, most recently the Brant News Readers’ Choice Award for Best Local Author (2017); the Hamilton Spectator Readers’ Choice Award for Best Local Author (2017, 2018 & 2019); the Readers’ Favourite International Book Awards Gold Medal in the Fiction – Supernatural genre (2018 & 2019) and Readers’ Favourite Gold Medal in the Young Adult – Fantasy – Urban genre (2019). Although she has a number of awards to her name, her true sense of accomplishment comes from the feedback of her readers: “I have always felt that as long as one person finds a little bit of happiness out of my books, I am, in my opinion, an accomplished author. A smile truly makes a difference.”

King is an active member of the Brantford Writer’s Circle (BWC), and currently serves as the group’s vice-president. The Brantford Writer’s Circle offers monthly get-togethers that offer a creative, supportive, and courteous environment for local writers to share their ideas and work. For writers, whether they are aspiring or accomplished, her advice is to, “Just write. Don’t worry about anything else until the first draft is complete,” she says, “otherwise any project can become quite daunting.” She also encourages artists to market themselves and their work regularly – “Books don’t sell themselves!”

King will be revealing her next book with a pre-release party at Kitchener Comic Con on February 29 and March 1, 2020, where fans can pick up advanced, signed copies.
